① to put a question to, ask

ⓒ The usage of the word w. regard to questioning deities (Hdt. 1, 53, 1 and oft.; SIG 977, 24; 1160; 1168, 16; Jos., Ant. 6, 123) approaches the mng. in the LXX: ἐ. τὸν θεόν, τὸν κύριον etc. inquire after God, i.e. after the thought, purpose, or will of God Ro 10:20 (Is 65:1).
